Taos Pueblo Artists Contemporary Artists Deryle Lujan (First Hunter) - Painter "The Pueblo is a place of sanctuary, a place where one can reminisce about times past. I get a sense of pride no matter how 'down and out' I feel when I go into the village. I am proud to be of Taos Pueblo." Deryle frequently represents the Taos Mountain and other mountains surrounding the Pueblo. "The mountains are a force of strength and longevity that can just be." Another aspect of Deryle's art is wildlife. "The connection with the animals, the birds, the elements of nature - the sense of being able to survive in that element is something to be attuned to." "I started drawing when I was young. I always had a stick in my hand drawing the earth. The earth was my first palette. The earth and all nature around it - the colors." Deryle creates watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings. He also draws with pastel pencils and black ink. Deryle's subjects are unique with authentic perspective. Deryle is known for his technical drawing skills and execution of color."
